We also award the Newcomer of The Year for sports journalists with less than two years' experience in the Industry, the Journalists Journalist of the Year Award and inductee members into the SAB Sports Media Hall of Fame.

Entrants for the SAB Sports Media Awards 2018 should submit work produced between 1st October 2017 and 30th September 2018.

Entries open at 08:00 on Monday 27th August 2018 and close at 17:00 on Friday, 5th October 2018.

Winners will be announced at an Awards Evening on Tuesday, 27th November at the Wanderers Club in Johannesburg.

Judging Process

Once the competition has closed, each judge has the opportunity to score the submitted entries for their specific category. These entries are judged according to scorecards that are provided to each judge. Once this process is complete, all judges meet with auditing firm Grant Thornton where the final scores are tallied.

The top finalists are then discussed in an open forum and then voting for the overall winners and merit winners is decided upon.

This is done by private ballot.

If there is only one entry in a sub-category, no category award will be given. If the judges believe it is deserving of an award, a merit award will be given.

If the judges believe none of the entries in a sub-category are of a sufficiently high standard, no award will be given.

In the event of a tie a second round of voting will take place with the auditors present.

In the event of a second tie, the convenor gets the casting vote.

The entire process is audited by Grant Thornton to ensure it is fair and transparent.
